York welcomes CUPE 3903 decision to stop photographing bargaining team members

York appreciates the fact that CUPE 3903 has stopped taking pictures of the university’s bargaining team members and using them on social media.

We had asked that CUPE 3903 stop this practice and we welcome this development. It helps create a civil and respectful atmosphere that allows both bargaining teams to focus their efforts on reaching a collective agreement.

York’s photography policy

There has been discussion on York’s policy for photographing faculty and staff. To clarify the issue, any guidelines that permit general photography of a workplace do not apply where employees have indicated they do not wish to be photographed, or where photographs are being used to target individuals.

York’s bargaining team expressly said that they did not want their photographs taken or used in social media posts.

Taking photographs when advised it is unwelcome to target individuals also runs counter to the University’s Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities provisions including Section 4:

Students are responsible for conducting themselves in a way that supports research, teaching and learning and upholding an atmosphere of civility, diversity, equity and respect in their interactions with others.
